The Journal of Vascular Surgery details some of the issues in older individuals such as traumatic dissection and rupture of the abdominal aorta as a complication of the Heimlich maneuver.

“…a wide range of complications have been reported. These include frequent minor injuries such as retinal detachment, rib fractures, and incidental pneumopericardium to rupture of the thoracic and abdominal organs. The most common complications described, in order of increasing number of cases reported, include rupture of the diaphragm, jejunum, liver, esophagus, and stomach. Similarly, injury to major vascular structures have been reported, including aortic stent graft displacement, rupture of the aortic valve, acute aortic regurgitation, laceration of a mesenteric vessel, and acute aortic thrombosis in both an aneurysmal and nonaneurysmal aorta. Of the six documented cases of acute thrombosis of the abdominal aorta after the Heimlich maneuver, only one patient survived; however, it is also important to note that the Heimlich maneuver was performed incorrectly in three of these six patients. Incorrect application consisted of forceful infraumbilical thrusts instead of the correct method of applying “supraumblical abdominal thrusts in an upward direction.”

So Why the Dechoker?

Toddler Dechoker Device - The Dechoker

The Dechoker uses powerful suction to remove obstructions which prevent breathing. It’s basically a vacuum pump that you place over a person’s mouth, while they’re on their back; you simply pull the plunger which dislodges their blockage in the process. It takes just seconds. You then place them on the side until they recover.

It’s a brilliant tool to have in every nursing home and assisted living facility.
