How Common is Choking?

Food is most often responsible for choking incidents in the elderly. Living alone, and having dentures or difficulty swallowing can increase risk.

On the other end of the scale we have toddlers. They seem to think everything can go in their mouth, and have chewing difficulties as well. Additionally, the size of a young child’s trachea (windpipe) is approximately the size of a drinking straw in diameter. So it’s easy to see how they can choke on most everything and anything.

Traditionally, the Heimlich Maneuver has been used for choking emergencies. We’ve all seen the posters in restaurants. But not every waitress, caregiver or parent is trained on this lifesaving maneuver. Additionally, it doesn’t always work (nothing is foolproof).   Overweight people can be particular hard to work with, and first responders may be too weak to perform the move, or worse, to late to arrive. You have just minutes to clear the airway of the obstruction. Additionally, there is a long list of diseases and ailments the preclude effective use of the Heimlich Maneuver.

You simply place the face mask over the mouth of the choking person and pull quickly on the tab in the back. The vacuum the Dechoker motivates the lodged item to move toward the device. It can be used by small people on large ones, large people on small or frail ones, or even by struggling choking victim on themselves.

The best part is there is no way for anyone to accidently push the debris farther down, because it employs a one-way valve. And it’s easy and simple to use with no certification classes to attend.

Registered with the FDA a a medical device, the Dechoker is available for purchase by anyone, and is a first-aid kit essential.

We worry about fires. There are smoke detectors and fire extinguishers everywhere we go. But more people choke to death than die in fires.

Doesn’t it make sense to have an inexpensive device as a backup to the Heimlich Maneuver?

Changing the way people respond in a choking emergency, the Dechoker first aid device, can be used to save lives in every community center and gathering place, first responder kit, restaurant, health care facility, school, business, sports venue, and in the home.
